The setting was spell-binding – a lake peninsula, surrounded by towering dunes, and until recently, only accessible by camels. After a week-long hike across the dunes -- 13 westerners, 13 Chinese staff and camel drivers and 33 camels, we didn’t let the presence of modern jeeps and a handful of tourists interfere with our delight at arriving at this 18th century monastery.
